Description
Every year, on the warm August evenings, Turi is illuminated by faith and wonder as the Triumphal Cart of Saint Oronzo makes its solemn passage through the town— the beating heart of the patronal celebrations. Rising to almost fifteen metres in height, sumptuous and radiant, this giant structure of wood and iron seems to challenge the sky itself, carrying with it centuries of devotion and history.
Its origins date back to 1851, when the first cart was built. Since then, generation after generation, the community has rebuilt and safeguarded it as a sacred treasure.
Today, in its third version inaugurated in 1971, the Cart continues to dominate the scene with its painted panels, refined decorations, and the unmistakable silver bust of the Saint, which rises amid a blaze of lights.
The most eagerly awaited moment comes on the evening of 26 August, when six mules, guided with great skill, slowly draw the Cart through the illuminated streets. A shower of confetti, the sound of marching bands, and warm applause accompany its passage.
It is a moment when time seems to stand still: tradition becomes spectacle, devotion turns into celebration, and the entire town gathers around its protector.
The Cart is not merely a monumental work of art, but a symbol of identity, community, and shared memory.
Watching it advance through the crowd feels like witnessing a living ritual—one that unites past and present and tells, year after year, the most authentic soul of Turi.
