What we offer
Description
The building was originally established as the seat of the College of the Poor Regular Clerics of the Mother of God of the Pious Schools, better known as the Piarist Fathers, who settled there in 1645 thanks to the testamentary bequest of the benefactor Notary Santo Cavallo. His aim was that, through the Pious Schools, free education would be provided to many young people in Turi, of both sexes and from all social backgrounds.
This activity continued until the arrival of Joachim Murat in the Kingdom of Naples and the enforcement of the Napoleonic suppression laws, which stripped regular monastic orders of their assets. The Turi Piarist house also held a prominent role as the seat of the Provincial Father, and for several years it hosted Saint Pompilio Maria Pirotti.
Later, the property passed to the Municipality of Turi and was left abandoned for around twenty years. In 1845, under the direction of the architect Domenico Morea, significant restoration works were undertaken, giving the building a new façade, which remains visible to this day. Since then, the College has served as the Town Hall of Turi.
