PRIMITIVO WINE
In the territory of Turi, the cultivation of the vine and the culture of wine boast an ancient tradition, made possible by a favourable climate and the distinctive nature of the soil. This long-standing vocation is evidenced by important archaeological discoveries, including decorated Attic kraters depicting figures and scenes from Greek mythology. These vessels, used for serving wine during ancient bacchanalian rituals, attest to the cult of wine in Peucetian Turi as early as the 5th century BC.
This enduring tradition reached a significant milestone in the 19th century, when the Primaticcio di Turi, produced by Mr Cozzolongo, was showcased at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1867 and later in Vienna in 1873, earning international recognition. The wine is characterised by an intense ruby-red colour with violet hues, gradually evolving towards orange tones with ageing. On the palate, it is smooth, warm, enveloping, full-bodied, and harmonious, with fruity notes of cherry, sour cherry, and plum, developing a velvety texture over time. On the nose, it reveals delicate and distinctive aromas of forest fruits, cherry, sour cherry, and plum.
Today, leading Turi-based wineries are members of the Gioia del Colle DOC Consortium, continuing to generate value for the local community and achieving notable success and recognition at Vinitaly, one of Italy’s most prestigious wine exhibitions.
