Description

The building that houses the municipal oven dates back to at least the 13th century, coinciding with the first south-western expansion of the old town. There are various theories regarding its original use until the second half of the 16th century, when records indicate that the Catalan Vaglia(e)s family owned the property. They added an upper floor, almost certainly intended as a residence, featuring the family crest, which is likely the same one now illegible on the building.

The oven chamber, located below street level, is accessed via five stone steps leading down to a chianche stone floor. The stone oven itself has a semi-spherical combustion chamber measuring five metres in diameter and 1.5 metres in height. It was the largest oven in Turi and remained in use until 1945, when privately run ovens became more common. Its maximum capacity was three quintals.
